"The political lesson of Watergate is this: Never again must America allow an arrogant, elite guard of political adolescents to by-pass the regular party organization and dictate the terms of a national election." - President Gerald Ford
In the beginning, in the Garden, the Serpent schemed and plotted against our very first parents. A generation later, Cain plotted against his brother Abel.
A tribe of brothers plotted and conspired against their youngest brother Joseph and broke their father's heart.
"And Judah said unto his brethren, What profit is it if we slay our brother, and conceal his blood? Come, and let us sell him to the Ishmeelites" - Genesis 37-26-27
Haman plotted against the Jews.
"But when Esther came before the king, he commanded by letters that his wicked device, which he [Haman] devised against the Jews, should return upon his own head, and that he and his sons should be hanged on the gallows. "-Esther 9:25
Herod plotted against a new born King.
"And he sent them to Bethlehem, and said, Go and search diligently for the young child; and when ye have found him, bring me word again, that I may come and worship him also." -Matthew 2:8
Absalom plotted and schemed against his own father, King David. But David was not knew to the plots of evil men, because in his youth, a king, King Saul did seek to kill David.
"A Song of Ascents. Of David. If it had not been the Lord who was on our side— let Israel now say— if it had not been the Lord who was on our side when people rose up against us, then they would have swallowed us up alive, when their anger was kindled against us; then the flood would have swept us away, the torrent would have gone over us; then over us would have gone the raging waters. ..." -Psalm 124:1-8
Judas betrayed the Son of man with a kiss.
Plotting and scheming are, you could say, a central theme of scripture.
So we shouldn't be surprised that it has happened throughout world history, American history, and certainly today.
In scripture, things don't end up all that well usually for the plotters either.
Cain? Exiled from the Garden
Joseph's brothers? Humiliated.
Haman? The Gallows.
Saul? Fell on his own sword.
Absalom? Took three spears in his heart.
Herod? Eaten by worms.
Judas? Hung himself.
The Serpents fate is sealed: The Lake of Fire.
The Lord, it is clear, is against the plotters and conspirators:
"There are six things that the Lord hates, seven that are an abomination to him: haughty eyes, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, a heart that devises wicked plans, feet that make haste to run to evil, a false witness who breathes out lies, and one who sows discord among brothers."
By all reports, we are just hours away from the much talked about "Memo" will be released for all to read. How this will culminate, no one knows, but it could get uglier than we have seen it in this nation since the Civil War, and it is already as bad as I have seen it in my lifetime..
These are dangerous times.
To be sure, the liars and the devisers of wickedness, those that run to evil and those that breath out lies....can inflict much pain.
But as we have seen, it doesn't usually end so pleasantly for them.
Pray tonight for America, your brethren, your countrymen and yes, let us pray for our enemies.
